damp diesel

Although my Mazda 323F 2.0Tdi (1999) starts on the button, it has started to 'misfire' (lumpy running) until it warms up. This started when the weather got cooler, more particularly on damper mornings (it lives on the drive). Once the engine has been warmed up it does not happen again that day, even if I leave the car for three or four hours. I recently had a new air filter, and the fuel filter was cleaned out, but it still happens. Is it likely to be a faulty injector? If so, how much are they? Cheers Gilbert

Is the car used for shortish runs? It sounds like one of the injectors is a bit gummed up . The easiest and certainly the cheapest solution is to add an injector cleaner to the fuel tank, it might take a few goes before there is an improvement but having an injector reconditioned or replaced is likely to be quite expensive. Yes, mainly short runs now, though it did happen a few times at the end of last winter when it was being used for a daily 30 mile commute.

Thanks, I'll try that. Cheers Gilbert

Sounds like a slightly sticky/leaky injector, but could be caused by a few other things (which are likely to be even more expensive than just an injector). Injectors aren't cheap, and provided there's no knocking, or major performance issues, I'd personally just leave it.

An italian tune up is always an option (ie warm it up, then hammer to the redline through the gears to clean it out abit)

I agree. But just in case... do you have any idea of injector prices? I can't find any on UK sites.

I do give it a bit of wellie now and then but it doesn't make any difference. Not like my old Cortina... :O)

Depends on the type of fuel system it has..

If its got something along the lines of a VP pump and conventional injectors, you'd be looking along the lines of circa 60quid each for new ones, or around 35 to 45 to have yours recon'ed. (plus labour, plus washers, plus VAT)

If its a common railer then around 120quid upwards each, plus sundries, plus calibration (dealer only) plus VAT.

I would be wary about slapping in one 'new' unit without having the others at least checked and tested for dribble / spray pattern etc.

Are you absolutely sure the engine is okay mechanically? i.e Check valve clearances, and compression test first.

Thanks for the info. And I'll make sure the engine is okay before I start coughing up. Cheers Gilbert

Just out of curiousity, where do you get injectors that cheap? Last VP pump injectors I got were well over a £100 each, and cheapest common rail injector I fitted was about £150, and those were certainly no where near retail prices. Plus combined with the fact it's a mazda, they'll most likely be less common injectors.

If it's common rail, Mazda use calibration resistors for the injectors, so plugging into a computer isn't necessary.

I buy usually OEM or dealer, but through a trade account- anything from 10% to 35% off RRP.

I dont have specific experience of a mazda application- only going on what other makes tend to need doing upon replacement.
