E28 MOT failure.

My brother's '87 BMW E28 520 failed its MOT. He's owned it for some 20 years - it was mine before that. It's covered some 250,000 miles - much of it towing a large caravan or trailer. And what did it fail on? A flexing tow bar. Exactly as it was when fitted - nothing loose or corroded.

Can't remember. It does apparently 'flex' if you stand on it. And always has done. The tester said if the ball is removed it no longer becomes a test item.

I'd respectfully suggest finding another tester:

'If a tow ball or pin is not fitted at the time of test, e.g. because it is detachable, has been unbolted or otherwise removed, but the attachment brackets are still in place, these brackets should still be assessed unless they have been deliberately rendered unfit for further use.'

I can't remember what it looks like - but it may not be possible to apply pressure easily without the ball. The various plates inside the boot and the panels they fix to are all easily seen and good.
