Error Code Glow Relais Vectra 2.0 TDI, how to solve?

Hi,

I've posted this question before I had the error code. I went to the garage (not OPEL because they ask twice as much as other garages), red the computer and got the errorcode "Glow Relais". They replaced the "Glow relais" and I tested it for 2 days, but every morning, the error was back. I only get this code, when the car is cold, so if it hasn't driven for a few hours (8h). If I drive it in the morning and start it at noon, I don't get the error. If I don't start it at noon but after work (17h30) , I get the error.

The error appears on the dash (engine light comes on) +- 10 seconds after starting. After driving a few minutes (say 10 min) and restarting it, the enginelight stays off. I can predict when I will get the error by looking at the dash illumination. I can see a slight variation in brightness, at the same rhythm as I hear the motor running. It does not run as smoothly as normal, but all the power is there.

For your information, spillpipes have been replaced recently(3 weeks), the car has had an oilchange(2 weeks), the air flow meter is new(few months), the is a new thermostat on it (few months), a new exhaust (2 weeks), new cables for the handbrake(2 weeks), new brakes on the front(few months), a new hose after the turbo (10 months)... and a few other things (also this year) :-s... Dieselfilter has been replaced, the main control unit (computer) has been replaced 2 years ago.

By exploring the car under the hood, I found two connectors between the radiator fan and the engine. The were hanging there just above their socket. I've put them back in but that didn't change anything. Does anyone know what those connectors are for?

So the car is almost as new, but everytime something is fixed, it's something else... but it runs fine :-)

Thanks

A code of 'glow relay' does not necessarily mean it needs replacing. It means it is getting a duff signal from the relay.

I would talk to your local dealer or a Vauxhall/opel specialist. They may charge more to read the codes but this would include an experienced diagnosis and would proably have avoided you replacing something unecessarily.

The Glow relais was replaced, but the garage put the old one back in, free of charge. I have no confidence in Opel specialists, those are the one who replace without asking and charging for it, and the parts cost twice as much as elsewhere. I have more confidence in the garage where I go now, he knows a lot more of cars (and Opel) than the Opel specialists where I've been...

So no idea what the problem could be? Bad wiring?

Has anybody bothered to check the glow plugs yet? The fault code would of most likely of been for a glow time relay general error, which the number one cause of is a faulty glow plug. The glowplugs are powered by two seperate feeds from the glow plug relay, and the relay compares the two feeds. If there is any difference between the feeds (such as a failed glow plug), the relay generates an error signal, which the ECU then displays as an engine management fault.
