Fiesta 1.4TDCi Gearbox

Anyone know of any problems with these?

The one on my dads Fiesta has just expired at 30000 miles, the car is under 2 years old as well. Apparently it needs replacing, however as its a car he gets through work, he hopefully, hasnt got to fork out a penny!!!

Thanks in advance

Probly still under warrenty anyway? Or is Ford's mechanical warrenty like their corrosion warrenty?

Three year warranty on mechanical things such as this I believe? As long as the car has been properly serviced, of course.

It'll be under warranty.

Ford retuned the ECU on the 1.4 HDI / TDCi engine to reduce the torque buildup, it's the key reason why the 206 1.4 HDI feels much perkier than the Fiesta 1.4 TDCi.

But, there should not be a problem. Ford's torque limits on the IB5 are very cautious... What, exactly, broke?

Dervman,

I'm unsure as to what broke however it is believed the gearbox had been replaced, but he now has it back, and is still jumping out of gear so I believe it was perhaps the gear linkage that was faulty???

I'll see him later today and get the full story!

Cheers

Aye, I'd be interested to see what did break...

Dervman,

Spoken to my dad and its confirmed it was the gearbox that broke, it has defiantly been replaced so it still jumping out of gear is down to a suspect linkage (Probably mis aligned or something along those lines) So am I correct in thinking its a Peugeot engine mounted to a ford gearbox?

When was this ECU modification? before they went into production?

Thanks again

The Pug TDci uses a ford ECU in the Fiesta, rather than a Siemens unit in the 206. The Ford ECU uses Fords own software- it isnt a "modification".

Yes, the IB5 is (mostly) limited to around 140 Nm or so of torque, and the TDCi produces around 160 Nm (as do other donks used with the IB5 transmission).

You're right, inasmuch as it is by original design. Just that the Ford code is deliberately limp wristed, eh? :)

I havent driven a Fester 'Ci but looking at the mapping for fueling and boost it looks like torque rise isnt so aggressive as with the Pug derivitive, as it holds boost back until higher in the rev range, and also there is a torque limit (through a swtich on the gar linkage presumably) operational in 1st and 2nd gear.

Back to back, the 206 has a much better turbodiesel like response at lower revs, the Fiesta noticably needs winding up.

In most other respects, the Fiesta wees on the 206, but I wish Ford used the PSA transmission.

I have to say that if you want the 206 'box in a Fester, what the hell is the Fester box like?

The 206's I test drove had to have _the_ nastiest gearboxes I'd ever tried (this includes a 1960's Massey Ferguson tractor and a 1985 Yugo!)

Heh; yes you're right. Ford's IB5 is a great transmission, it just needs the ability to handle 400 Nm... :)

All 206s have, erm, interesting gearboxes. "They all do that, sir" was the comment. "No automatic diesel option either." Pah.
