Being the nosy little bugger I am, I'd like to hook up the laptop to the ECU in my 98 Escort (1.6 16v). eBay doesn't seem to yield much in terms of PC based leads, just the crappy draper things.
Anyone know where I can get a hold of one?

And what do you hope to glean from it? Unless you've got the proper software and even then, actually know what you're looking at then there's no point.
So you're assuming your car has a port which your PC can access directly? And that your PC includes software that could make sense of it?
Car makers ain't that stupid.
They've been *forced* in the US to provide a common port so one universal reader can look at emission related items, though.
Nothing to gain, it's just pure curiosity.
If you must know, I have proper software and I know what I'm looking at, and I know what I want to look at.
Ta, G.
Not directly, but via an interface that connects to the EEC V port.
I have a respository full of stuff. I wanna play and see what works best.
Sorry - what has this got to do with me wanting to read live data from the ECU?
Ta, G.
Perhaps it would help if you'd explain which data and why?
Have you been able to find out what kind of interface the ECU uses on the diagnostic plug? (i.e. RS232, ethernet, etc.) Better still, do you know what kind of interface the Rover MEMS system has?
Darren
Well it won't help me find what I'm looking for, but I want to be able to drive about while recording info from the ECU such as engine load, operating temperature, lambda readings etc.
Ta, G.
The interface on the DLC won't have any relation to the one that goes into the PC. There will almost certainly be an interface box between the two, of which may connect via USB or serial. I doubt very much it would ever use ethernet.

In that case I'd be expecting something along the lines of an M-bus cable as used on mobile phones, though without any details on baud rate, stop bits, etc. (let alone voltage levels) it's going to be difficult to interface...
As there's only the three unshielded wires for communications (I think, or I could be thinking of the MEMS system) and one of those is just a ground, it's going to be low baud rate with XON/XOFF type handshaking.
Darren
In short,
:)
Is the Zetec-E ECU ODB-II compliant?
Ta, G.
Yes- as long as its running EEC 4.5 or 5.
Tim..
If it's 1996 onwards... yes it should be.
No mention of where you got the cable / interface from though, care to share? :-) ... and how much did it cost?
Ta, G.
Err, read it again, it mentions R & D Harrison...
