Ford Mondeo ST24 engine whining noise

Hi all,

Thought I better post this after I got an enquiry to an old posting I'd made earlier this year. Apologies for not having done so before!

I had a Ford Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6 that developed a loud whining noise from the engine bay. It become loud enough to be very embarrassing.

After much faffing around I eventually found out that it's a known problem to Ford - the noise has been officially termed the "moosing" noise due to it sounding like a Canadian moose in labour or something. Seems our Canadian cousins do have a sense of humour after all! ;o)

Anyway, Ford issued an internal service bulleting detailing this problem and the fix is a replacement part that should cost around £25. A lot of dealers aren't aware of this problem though as it's not THAT common so be prepared to educate them if you have to deal with them on this!

The noise is caused by resonance in the induction system and the replacement part simply has an extra 'dead-end' tube fitted to cancel the resonance. I can't remember the official name of the part but it's the short fat section of concertina type pipe at the top of the engine bay that sits behind the accelerator assembly. it has three connections to the induction system fixed by simple circlips and can be replaced in just a couple of minutes by anybody with a screwdriver.

I understand that Ford have apparently asked one person £90 for a replacement kit which is obviously not the correct thing unless they've found an opportunity to get a little extra cash out of the unsuspecting customer and have hiked the price of the kit I bought for £23.something! It's a poor design fault anyway so don't let them get away with it should this occur to any of you!

They originally provided me with a standard replacement rather than the modified part and didn't even want to give me back my money on it when I went back to order the correct part!

It's a shame that Ford are constantly let down by such a poor dealer network, I've had problems like this all through the years.

By the way, the dealer that finally did give me the correct part number was the service & parts centre at Warley, Brentwood which is in Southern Essex. I think it's part of the Allen Ford franchise (if the service & parts centres are franchised).

Anyway, hope that helps a few people if you have the same problem.

Happy holidays...

If fitting a resonator cured it the noise can't have "developed" but must have been a characteristic of the engine from the day it was built.

More generally on all makes of car when tracing this type it pays to check that all the hoses and clips on the airfilter and induction system are properly fitted.

Of course - it's one of the first things I did. Initially Ford supplied me the standard part as a replacement so the whole thing was removed, surfaces cleaned, new part fitted etc and it still happened which proves the sound was not caused by loosening pipework etc. I had the car almost two years before it first occurred so it definitely developed where there was no problem previously although I agree that an issue like that doesn't just appear. Apparently the noise is actually caused by an internal part of the induction system resonating so if that's true then it's something you wouldn't be able to check yourself anyway. The replacement pipe has an add-on which cancels out the resonance. The noise itself reportedly came from an inlet valve in part of the manifold which I wouldn't have the first clue of how to check it's proper operation!

Don't take this the wrong way though, I'm not saying you're wrong, just that it isn't always the obvious and any competent person could easily miss this if they are not a 'professional' service engineer or mechanic etc. Even two of Ford's own servicing departments missed it!!

Just spreading the word :o)
