I did me woodwork lessons there Ca 1960. Two years to do a Mahogany table lamp.

It was a very famous building in it's time, ISTR Sir Humphrey Davey gave lectures/demonstrations there with his Safety Lamp.

Oddly, there seems to be no references to it nowadays.

Could it possibly be that a philistine City Council sold it off to be demolished for yuppy flats?

Two years?? I haven't done much woodwork, I drilled out a bottle of Potuguese Rose wine (the Mateus type of bottle) and made a lamp. Nothing like Mahogany though.

I have some window frames to finish witrh the router. Life is so different now, I cut grooves for the glass with a ripping saw only a few weeks ago, life is much easier with tools and tables... I was doing it on my thighs and in the back lounge!!!

But table lamps? You must've known how to sharpen a chisel!

Wouldn't surprise me. Leeds and the surrounding areas have much history related to scientific discovery and progression in their old attics.

Sadly, now comes the ASBO.

The net is not the be all and end all, the library in the area may be someuse. I recall I read a book from the central library on the Headrow that told me about the monks and their rearing of sheep on the hills behind the Headrow.

It was quite an eyeopener to think about Leeds as a large grassy slope.

Seriously many of the students on the Pizza-Ology course come from overseas because they can get much better wages back home if they have a certificate (Any Certificate) from a British "University" (Any "University", any course).

Basically they are here to get a certificate and prove (and improve) their English Language.

Whilst not knocking that, our educational institutions should have higher ideals/priorities which are related to preparing our own young adults for a productive adult life. JMHO

It's true, I had a conversation with an ex employee from Cunards, I argued it was religion (and my concept of religion is very broad and encompasses more than church or bible etc) that led to the decline of the shipping industry here. He told me no, it is the lack of workshop engineers. But I aint going into the workshop (it is a very mental place) easily, because of religion so I reckon it is religion. If the reason we lost shipping was because we lost our shops, and the reason we lost our shops was caused by religion (and its associate politics) then it is the fault of religion (but mainly politics and law - they are religion anyhow, aren't they?).

There is nothing better than an attentive arguement which gets into every nook and cranny and flexes every nerve and sinew of the bit under consideration.

Religion and Region only have two letters in them.

Those overseas students typically subsidise the rest of the institution, and hence our own young adults.
