Going to a pre-booked MOT

Anyone know if there is a limit to how far you can take a untaxed and non MOT'd car to a test centre for a pre-booked MOT.

Due to the nature of the vehicle I would rather use a testing station that specialises in s**te old Land Rovers, said station is about 40 miles away, can't find any online documents that say it has to be the nearest station.

I have no idea but I really feel that if someone wants to prosecute you for taking a vehicle for a legally required test for which you can prove you have a booking, and that you have undertaken work to prepare the vehicle for the test then we live in a screwed society.

40 miles sounds absolutely reasonable given your vehicle needs.

But no, I can't find any reference to a legal requirement to go to the nearest centre either.

I'm sure there's something somewhere about a reasonable distance, but given that you're only taking it 40 miles to a specialist, I don't think you'll have any problems, provided it's roadworthy.

If you were taking it the length and breadth of the country, then I suspect you may have issues should you get stopped.

I would hope that is the logical thing in the eyes of the law, however there are several garages localy who *could* MOT it, I would however trust a expert, so they might think I am taking the mickey, I guess we shall see.

All the cameras on the M25 are going to light up like xmas trees when they see a SORN'd vehicle trundling along ;-)

And how is he going to MOT it any differently? Or does he "turn a blind eye" to the common early Landy failures?

providing there is a good reason, such as specialist repairer/mot place there would be no trouble.

He will be more understanding towards some of the delicacies and design issues Land Rover built into their vehicles.

He will will not complain when he gets underneath and large lumps of dried mud, dear shit and the odd cow pat fall off into his beard.

He will now allow a spotty oik to rag seven bells of s**te out of it on the emissions test and will not wonder why you get a strange crunching noise when you put it on the rolling road.

If it still works, you could argue it is unusual.

So I was right...

I'm not prejudiced. I hate everyone equally.

Nope, I want to take my Land Rover to someone who understands them, that concept difficult for you to grasp ?

Just don't do *anything* excepot go straight there. I used to work with somebody who got done because he dropped the kids off at school on the way... it was on the direct route as well.

40 miles is too far it has to be a reasonable distance, all mot testing stations should be competent to test the class of vehicle they have been authorised to do, I think you will have a hard time justifying to the local plod why you are taking it the 40 miles when you possibly have a testing station just down the road that is cable of testing your vehicle.

one of my customers got away with saying he was bringing the car to me for repair/mot, after getting a producer on his journey. I had to write a letter for him confirming it all. He lives 80 miles away, so it does work, there just has to be a good reason why !!

Blimey, a pit - how retro! I think having the thing up on a lift makes it easier for this sort of thing - but yes, the people are happy to show me bits they're worried about. (actually they were happy for me to reattach the steering rack gaiter while it was up on the lift and they were inspecting other bits - it's a lot easier and safer to do it from there than at home, and they found my resulting blackened arms quite amusing :-) ).

I can see the point of PPE most of the time, but it's not like the mechanics going to knock him over because he couldn't see him without a HiViz on is it?

I think nowadays they don't let you on site without hi-viz. I haven't got a truck anymore, so I don't go now.

Indeed, some garage owners might. Others may be rather more relaxed about the whole thing, experience having told them how to avoid accidents. It probably helps that I don't look entirely clueless, and obviously work on the car myself, so am unlikely to eg sue for getting oil on my nice (insert unsuitable article of clothing here, eg white jacket).

Oh God, not this one again! No, there is no limit to how far you can drive an untaxed/untested vehicle to a prebooked test.

It doesn't matter whether you understand land rovers or not, the test still has to be conducted in the same way.

It's the letter of the law that applies, not common sense. You are legally allowed to take it to ANY mot station for a prebooked test.
