Head gasket sillicone sealant - bodge job?

Modern HGV "Euro 4" emission standard engines have something that works along the line of this.

My Focus diesel does and that's a six year old design.

I've always assumed that it will only vent through when the engine is running, and ethanoic acid will die rather quickly in a combustion enviornment.

This is of course good advice for the home mechanic - it *may* not eb necessary but it's best not to chance it as you say.

So do more and more diesel cars. Self regenerating soot filters are the next 'big thing' and are here now.

So have the last four of mine, the oldest of which was built in 1998. Thank goodness it has an extremely durable exhaust system made of mainly stainless steel.
