Help auto gbox fault vauxhall cav 2cdi 1990

Was stationary with the car in neutral for a few minutes then heard squeeling noise from gbox. Noise stopped when I moved away in drive. Drove home normally but heard a brief noise moving from neutral to drive. Switched off engine (in park) then re-started. Can now move selector without any noise and car moves smoothly but have the flashing warning light.

Would be very grateful for any suggestions/advice.

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

First thing to do would be to check the gearbox oil level. Check with the engine idling and at normal operating temperature. The level should be between the min and max marks. The oil should also be quite clear. If it is very black or has metal patricles in it, then you could be looking at expensive trouble ahead.

Was it defiantly from the 'box, or could it have been the drive belt or power steering belt? Did the noise coincide with you using some electrical equipment which would have put a load on it?

I did try to rev the engine a bit as drive belt noise usual changes or stops when you do this and couldn't hear any difference. Also the noise was repeated momentarily as I moved between neutral and drive.

I did change the transmission oil recently (with dexron 2 equivalent) but the old oil wasn't particularly dirty. I seem to have overfilled it a little though. That won't cause a problem like this though, will it?
