I was wandering , how long are you supposed to leave the engine after turning it off before checking the atf level ? Is it checked hot or cold anyway ?

Don't know about the Honda, but usually ATF needs checking at a fairly specific temp with the engine running.
Gearshifter in PARK with hot engine at idle.
