Stick with manufacturers recommended type and size, anything else could be construed as unsuitable by police and insurance and possibly MoT tester (less likely)

So long as by type you don't just mean that if Renault recommend Michelin that's all you ever buy. Other than that I'd go with what you say. Looking on tyre manufacturererers websites can give you a good guide as to what to fit.

by type, I meant specification, not make, although it is hard to better michelin anyway, and they are ever so cheap if you have a costco card!!

And another thing. My local tyre shop insisted [1] on putting on tyres that at least matched the speed rating of the tyres already fitted. If some twit had previously put unnnecessarily expensive tyres on - I'd have been stuck with following suit. Anyone else heard of this?

Yep - I buy V or W rated cars, my car has a Vmax of 140mph but came with W rated on the car. Some places will not fit V rated tyres, others don't care.

Mate has an S type, and local Kwak Foot won't put anything other than P6000 on it... Just go elsewhere....

yes, I have had that, the solution was to take the wheels in, say you have bought them secondhand and need the right speed rating tyres for the car.

You can take the pee all you like - for £250 I get a car with room for my legs, which can get over 50mpg even when in a hurry [1], suits my relaxed style of driving and seats seven.

the 2 litre injection petrol estate my sister had could easily exceed 120 (on the clock) I never dared to really try it for flat out.

Use the quote from the dealer to ring local tyre places specifying exactly the tyres you want (don't mention anything to do with the dealer) and then play one off against the other. Some will tell you to piss off, others will bite, but you'll get exactly the tyres required at less than half price.

When all said and done what does it matter where you get them from, or what price you pay, providing they're the right tyres.
