Megane camshaft

I have a '96 Megane 1.6 8 valve with 100k on the clock.

The top end is very noisy when hot with quite a loud tappety noise - sounds like just one of the followers rather than all that is making the noise.

I'm wondering whether I should attempt the repair myself but I don't know how easy (or difficult) this engine is to work on. I've done head changes before, but not for a long time.

I would imagine that I might have to replace the camshaft. Given the mileage and that I don't know the history of the car, it would probably be wise to change the cam belt also.

Specific questions I have are: do i have to remove the head should I need to change the camshaft? if i remove the head, would you advise me to clean and re-grind valves etc? are there any particular difficulties with the job or with changing the belt? would I need any specialised tools? If it's not a diy job, how much might it cost me at a garage?

I have been quoted £150 for a second hand complete cylinder head with a 2 month warranty - does this sound like good value?

I appreciate any help offered

Neil

If it's overhead cam then take the cam cover off and have a look at it

- it may be that a follower has gone bad and that will damage the cam in time.
