I wouldnt touch a Jag or RR or MB for that money!! It could end in bankrupcy.

A another possibility might be a Volvo S80 T6, although they can be glitchy with electronics, and 280bhp through the front tyres makes for alittle waywardness!

IMHO, aside from climate control panels sometimes going abit dicky, and suspension bushes in general (not the end of the world and a walk in the park for a marque specalist) they dont go wrong as long as they have regular servicing.

I completely agree. A friend has just bought a complete minter E430, 76k on the clock, wanted for nothing for £5100. Ok its juicy but for a weekend car he doesnt care.

I'd buy a Merc for £5k with a million times more confidence than any £5k BMW. Most of the problems with BMWs I've known have been with ones that cost a lot more than £5k.

I've never had any real problems with cheap Mercs - apart from my 190E that blew a head gasket and I couldn't be bothered fixing it.

FWD = not a proper luxury car. End of story.

I'd steer clear of the 750 but I bought a poorly maintained '96 740 with the better 4.4 engine and steptronic gearbox for just over 2k a couple of years ago and spent maybe another 500 on it to get it roadworthy. It's a dated design now but often gets more comments than my M3. It's got heated electric seats, rear sun blind, split aircon, TV & sat nav, steptronic gearbox and now has sports suspension. The ride is still good and it corners reasionably well for a big car.

There's not much difference in how cars are constructed and in my experience it's the dealers who are unreliable. If you can do some work yourself old BMWs can be good buys.

Older mercs have perhaps a better prestige image but things go wrong on them too.

True, but they can be an utter pain to fix. Dealers are an unhelpful bunch, not as useless as the Alfa dealer network but at least as snotty.

Things go wrong with every old car, I've had some rough old Mercs but they tend to be remarkably cheap to fix, especially compared to BMWs.
