mpg following head gasket replacement

Prior to head gasket failure on my rover 416 I was getting around

400-450 miles from a tank (approx. 42 mpg). However, from the first full tank after having the head gasket replaced I only managed 260 miles and most of this was motorway driving. The second tank does not appear to be doing much better.

Car is running smoothly and generally goes as before. Before approaching the mechanic, that did the job, I was wondering if anyone has any idea what might be causing this? My only thought was if the cambelt was put back on one notch out.

Thanks for the help,

Gordon

If performance is good generally you can rule out cam timing, but its certainly worth double and triple checking- especially the exhaust cam.

I would check the O2 sensor is plugged back in properly...
