Disconnect battery. Remove metal strip/wire that goes to all the glowplugs usually held on to each plug by a nut. Take plugs out the same as you would a sparkplug.

Usually a tap at the bottom of the fuel filter or pump housing.

Why are you changing anyway, are they faulty? One way to test is to remove the connection going to the screwed terminal on top of the glow plug; and connect a multimeter, on the resistance (or ohms scale), between the screwed terminal and a good earth around the engine area. If it is a healthy plug, there should be resistance measured. All plugs should have the same resistance, if any are"high resistance or no resistance ", this would indicate a broken element. They are just heating elements.

Another way is to remove the plugs if no meter is available. With the connection on, hold each plug against the engine metal body, have someone else switch on the ignition without starting the engine; and carefully feel by touch, if the tip of the plug gets hot. Jaymack

had the car 2 years. i have never changed the glow plugs. poor starting on cold mornings ( 1 minute to start ) slight lack of power, 87,000 on the clock. also a little black smoke when climbing hills.

thanks for your contribution.

Only thing the glow plugs affect is starting.

The slight lack of power, and black smoke are more likely fuelling problems, and so could the bad starting be fuel related.
