No Heating in Vauxhall Astra

Hi,

I have a 1995 Petrol Astra Hatchback, recently it has stopped blowing out hot air, even when the engine is warmed up.

The blowers run correctly but only blow out cold, do you have any idea what I would start looking at to resolve this problem

Thanks, Chris

  1. Is it full of coolant?
  2. Has it recently been low on coolant?

Has this happened at the end of summer when you turned the heat on for the first time? If so it may be that the tap which turns it on is seized in the off position after staying there all summer long. Get someone to operate the control while you check under the bonnet that the lever is moving and not just the cable bending.

There are several possibilities:-

1). An air lock or blockage in the heater matrix. Have you recently had to top up the coolant level or change the coolant?

2). Does the car have air conditioning? If it does, there is a vacuum controlled valve in the coolant lines to the heater matrix that cuts off flow to the heater when operated. This, or the vacuum control system, could be faulty.

3), The mechanism or cables controlling the position of the hot air flap in the heater box have broken/come adrift.

4). There is a problem with the thermostat that is preventing the engine from warming up correctly. Does the temperature gauge move to its normal (mid) position withina couple of miles of driving?
