OT: Insurance for a Month?

Oct 17, 2008 25 Replies

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Adrian saying something like:

F*ck, good point. Iirc, the vast majority of the time I steered or pulled towed cars they were actually legal (in that, they'd broken down or similar), so the question of that never arose. Mind you, that didn't ever stop me from doing exactly the same to s**te old heaps to the MoT /breaker /wherever. One could argue, of course (and it probably has been), that as soon as a car is towed it becomes a trailer and not subject to the normal car legal requirements.

Whatever; when I towed the Scim back here from Leicester via Wales, using an A-frame, I was passed on motorway by numerous cop cars and bikes and got nothing but the odd glance. Perhaps it was the Irish plates and they reckoned it wasn't worth the bother for no result.

Grimly Curmudgeon gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Indeed you could. At which point, it'd be subject to the normal trailer legal requirements. Ooops.

Max laden mass below 750kg? Nope. Needs _automatic_ brakes on all four wheels, operated by the towing vehicle not somebody sat in the trailer, then...

You don't need an MOT to drive to a place of permanent destruction, though you do still need insurance, of course.

IIRC, this was discussed here a couple of years back with the conclusion (backed up by a test case or something equally compelling) that it would only become a trailer if radically altered - eg no engine.

Bloke down the road from me towed a 109" Land Rover 250 miles on an A frame behind his Passat! I wouldn't have risked it for 5 miles on B roads, but he couldn't see anything wrong at all. Prior to that, the daftest I'd come across was the bloke who bought my Land Rover V8 and towed it 150 miles home behind his 88" Land Rover. Some people just seem to get away with anything.

Screwed, then. Otoh, I've not known of anyone being done for it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Legally, yes. Absolutely.

Quite. All you need is a plod in a bad mood, and you're looking at a _very_ spoiled day.

Proper trailers make everybody's life so much easier.

NFU Mutual sounds like a good bet - no cancellation fee, pro-rata refund.
