Ouch! cost of alternator.

Have been quoted £200 for an alternator for my 1994 Rover 220 - not including fitting. I had thought of trying to replace the voltage regulator / brush assembly first, but seems this is not available as a separate item. I guess I could try breakers yards - anyone had luck with scrapped alternators? Only problem is I'm waiting for an op at the moment and probably won't be able to fit it myself. As there are specialist garages that do, for example, only clutches - I wondered if there are any that specialise in alternators? GTS

In Hull, a place that reconditions them charges around =A350.

I'm not prejudiced. I hate everyone equally.

That's a good price - if the Rover didn't guzzle so much petrol it would be worth the trip! (from Surrey).

Look up autoelectrical or car electrical services in your local Yellow Pages

You'll want an autoelectricians, not a garage.

Try Lucas, often their depots do a good deal on exchange alternators.

Yes. It's almost a cert that when the car was scrapped the alternator was still working. And they guarantee them anyway (and normally fit them for a low labour charge)

I'm not sure you'd make it all the way on one battery though....

Yes, well, that maybe says more about Hull than about alternators. Alloy wheels are bloody cheap in Liverpool ...
