Overheating problem....

Well as it is at the moment, the temp goes high if its idle, the fan is coming on now and lowering the temp when idle (it goes back down to where it should be), when the cars on a run or its accelerated the temp goes down without the aid of the fan, he said the impeller may not be turning enough when its idle but turning enough when its revved!

hmmm sounds fine to me.

At idle the temp. SHOULD rise, then fall when the fan runs. At speed the airflow through the rad. will be enough to keep the temp. fairly steady.

Therefore, it sounds like it is now operating as it should, so why change the pump?

The temp isnt just going slightly higher, its going up to HOT!, it ALWAYS been mid way and never varied at all, never needed the fan before and has always stayed solidly in the middle whether in traffic or not.

That'll be the fan that does that though, not the waterpump. Either you've misdescribed it or your garage is clueless & ripping you off.

Looking through the threads so far, you seemed to have two problems - one, the fan, you say is now fixed. The other is poor coolant circulation - this is winter, the fan should not need to come on when stationary. Poor circulation could be caused by sludge but by the sound if it that has been fixed. Two other possibilities - water pump or thermostat.

In one of your later posts you say that the temperature goes down if the car is accelerated (I assume you mean the engine revved when stationary) or on a run. Either the water pump is working at marginal efficiency (rotor corroded) or the thermostat is only partially opening. If it has just started happening then my money is on the thermostat, and they are cheap!

Just got the car back an hour ago and it was indeed the water pump! the impeller was not functioning properly due to corrosion!, Just had the car in the drive ticking over for 30 minutes and its fine! thanks for all the rpelies etc

cheers
