The proposal is to have the first MOT at 4th birthday, and every 2 years until the 10th birthday. Then annually after that...
Brings it into line with France's Control Technique at least.
now i doubt very much you'd get joe public to sign it, to them they will be "saving" money, why pay =A350+ every year when every 2 years will do ! what they dont realise is the road safety implications this is going to have if its implicated.
some cars we dont see from one year to the next & thats only for the annual mot test & the state they come in are horrendous, there is no way they would remain roadworthy for 1 year let alone 2 !!!!
btw ive signed it, im off to my VOSA meeting tommorrow night, so it will be interesting to see what they have to say on the matter.

yes & ive had the misfortune to see & work on some vehicles that have had that test !!!
the uk has the best road safety record for road vehicles in europe with the present system.
I know exactly what you mean. Vehicles with bald tyres & non-existent brakes getting repaired just for the MOT test. Will these vehicles get to the 2yr test without being involved in a serious accident ?

Apparently they are not as bad as some would have you believe. When this matter was on TV before Xmas (and surprisingly didn't generate a thread here) they said that the European experience was that very few accidents could be attributed to unroadworthy vehicles.

Personally I think that government testing stations with absolutely no financial interest whatsoever would be a much better solution, their only remit being to insist that one gets any defects put right at an independent garage and re-tested before a vehicle is allowed back onto the public highway.
We'd then at least know that we're not at the mercy of a garage who may have some vested interest in fixing non-existent faults.

Can't help thinking that you have a financial interest in keeping the status quo.
Did I say anything about changing the test to bring it into line with the CT? I only mentioned the time interval.
We were talking about time intervals, not content and regulations of the actual test.

Do you have any idea how many people on the roads of this country think that the MOT is sufficient annual maintenance, and that it provides a once- a-year peak condition for their vehicle...?
Peculiar way to ask the question! Those unaware of the proposal would be unaware that they would need to vote, to have a say in the matter. Worst scenario 10 vote for none against, passed unanimously. Something like the Welsh Assembly vote.
On most cars, they can't check the thickness of the pads during an MOT.
I can see the introduction of the EU standardised MOT. Everything else is being standardised bit by bit.
They'd have to dilute ours tremendously in order to give the new accession countries vehicles any hope of ever passing.
