Pug 306 DT Oil In Air Sys

Hi

I have a pug 306 TD 95 N plate.

I have noticed that I am losing lots of oil though cannot source the problem. Its not spewing so I can't exactly find the location of the leak. Any help would be most appreciated. I spend enough at the pug dealer on spares without giving them the luxary of paying their disgnostic fees as well.

Genreally looking down from the top I see no visible oil leaks. however underneath is a different story. It is covered across compeletely, right up almost to the air intake. Its losing about 2 litres of oil for every 8000 miles.

The first time I cleaned it up I noticed some oil residue around the join for the air filter to air intake pipe at the top back right, where it is joined by a smaller pipe and then disappears behind the intercooler. I added a jubilee clip to this pipe and cleaned it up. However from the bottom the immediate area is not absolubtly caked up in oil, it seems to collect further down, making me think there is something else at the other side. I've also noticed its starting to mist out of the oil filler/ dipstick, but this may just be the transfer of the bakc pressure from the clip I applied.

Its not dripping, though if I actually touch the underside it is so badly covered that I'm surprised it hasn't started to drip?

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It passed the MOT with this leak, so the emissions must have been ok, theres no black smoke or anything, only the usual short and light cloud for light grey smoke when its started from dead cold, which I perceive to be normal.

Any help on where to start looking would be most appreciated.

Kind Regards Austin

Now, you see, if you had an Alfa you'd be proud of it using so little.

2 litres every 8000 miles is not excessive. What mileage has the car done?

That'll be the crankcase breather pipe.

Most engines mist out off the dipstick + filler cap. It's caused by the back pressure found in Internal Combustion engines. The crankcase is vented by the pipe you put the hose clip on, and the mist is drawn back into the engine, where it is burnt. The vent normally goes through a wiremesh/baffle in the rocker cover so that most off the oil mist is caught and not burnt. This is what causes the oil residue in the inlet pipes.

Probably because the excess oil get's blown off when driving.

Only reliable way is to clean the engine, and let it run.

The XUD engine will run perfectly forever so long as it gets oil and filter changes as per the book. Oil can appear mysteriously all over the lower engine if the camshaft and crankshaft seals are worn. That causes oil to be deposited over the cambelt too. Cured by fitting new seals a midges away from the line worn by the old ones. (New cambelt too of course). It looks a lot but hardly enough loss to show on the dipstick. The turbo is fed by air contaminated by crankcase emissions which seems a bit of poor design as carbon build up on the turbo bearings isn't a good idea. One of the reasons for doing more frequent oil changes. DaveK
