It'll be the 88 PS / 178 Nm version as used in the Mondeo - these were Ford's first use of the intercooled turbodiesel donk, a reworked example of the one used in the Sierra. The Escort TDX was basically a "special edition" LX with the turbodiesel donk, and not many were made with this model decal.

Performance and economy is good, although the ride and handling isn't up to the standard of the day (the Citroen ZX and Peugeot 306).

The published figures I have for the intercooled turbodiesel Escort indicate a 0 - 60 time of approximately 11 seconds, and a maximum speed of just under

110 mph - about average.

Later on, Ford introduced the non-intercooled TD and changed this versions' badge to be TDi, to indicate that it had more power. The intercooled engine is preferable to the non-intercooled . . . it's punchier and more economical . . .
