Fiat Uno 1.0ie 93K

Having talked to mechanics at local Fiat garage their best guess (without testing the car) is that the 'key codes' may have 'gone'. As soon as I can tow the car down there I'm getting the diagnostics checked to see if this is the problem but has anyone got any insight into these. As far as I can work out the chip in the key and the black box it 'talks to' are not friends anymore and this could cost as much as the car's worth for a new set. The Fiat mechanics weren't sure if I could replace these parts (key, ignition barrel, black box) with one from a scrap car. Could I, and if so what would I be letting myself in for?
