Removing an exhaust part.

I need to remove the 'Y' piece which joins the downpipes to the main pipe on my SD1. The system is SS. The front joints were easy - flange couplings

- but the rear one is a slide inside the other pipe type. The clamp came off ok - but it appears to be well and truly stuck. Any tips?

I have an SDS drill which can hammer only - I wondered about grinding a chisel blunt and trying to hammer the outer off? The car is up on axle stands outside the house so can't really take it to a specialist.

They do make special air chisel bits as you decscribe, but they are rarely effective if it is really stuck. First thing to try is some sideways movement on the rear part of the exhaust. Next step: If you want to preserve the bit you are removing then use a grinder to cut a slit down one side, it can then usually be removed as you have released the tension. After removal get the slot welded back up (if needed)

If the outer is knackered anyway, take an angle grinder to it. If it isn't knackered, hammering it off will soon fix that.

It actually came off quite easily with help from a neighbour. Just needed a bit more twisting effort than I could manage on my own. The bit of the pipe which was inside the other was like new - still shiny. Although most of the rest of the system is showing its ten years or so. The downpipes especially look like rusty steel. But still solid.

a very little nickel based antiseize seems to help. But that could just be a placebo effect.
