Renault19 diesel help please!

I've just bought a renault 19 rt turbo diesel from an auction.

When starting the car in the morning, i get a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. This clears up after a few seconds. This only happens when the cars been standing overnight. I also get a little bit of smoke from the exhaust if i'm accelerating hard, and then change gear. Could this be valve seals/guides? If so how much am i looking at to have it repaired?

Also do i need a special tool to undo the sump-nut? Where can i get it from?

One more question! I'm going to empty the cooling system, flush it and replace with new water/antifreeze. WHats the best way to drain the system?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Not sure about the smoke, don`t think its anything to worry about. As for the sump bolt, my renault 19 used an 8mm square socket. If you have a look on ebay, you will probably see a few haynes manuals that should be of help to you.

Regards Mark.

Should start on half a turn after the glowplug light goes out. If it has to churn before starting, a glowplug (or two) is on the way out. One puff of black smoke nothing to worry about. White smoke=unburned fuel, blue smoke=worn engine. Black smoke when accelerating hard - that's ok too. DaveK.

You most likely have one glow plug u/s. Change it.

I also get a little bit of

Usual- these pre electronic Renault TD's are abit smokey. Some high quality fuel and some injector cleaner may help, but if its really bad then its time to have the injectors rebuilt, and possibily the pump too. How many miles has it done?

Probably a 3/8 square drive.

Engine nice and hot, heater on, expansion cap off, bottom hose off to quickly dump the coolant and hopefully pull most of the crap out with it. I'd then refill it with plain water- ensuring you dont airlock it. Then run the engine up to temperature again, and drain it out again. Should be pretty clean after this. Refill with 50% antifreeze /soft water. (water butt etc)

I asked a renault specialist this morning, and they said it was probably the glowplugs as well. The smoke is white, if it makes a difference. They quoted me £100+vat, is this a good price?

thanks for info regarding square drive, will get one today!

I've tried getting the bottom hose off, but it won't budge! Is there a drain valve on the radiator? If not, how much will a garage charge to do it?

The last time I changed glowplugs was on a fiesta about six years ago. Cost me about twenty quid for four plugs, found them at a car boot sale believe it or not, changed them in half an hour.

Has anybody got experience of changing the glowplugs on a renault 19? Is it an easy job for a begginner to do?

Pop the bonnet and take a look. Glow plugs often look a wee bit like spark plugs and they'll probably be wired with dirty big thick wire.

On some diesels the glow plugs are nice and exposed and easy to change. On others there is stuff in the way like intercoolers and fuel pumps.

Examples:

1991 Peugeot 205 1.7 normally aspirated = piece of piss 1998 Peugeot 306 1.9 normally aspirated (same block but with some revisions) = a bit harder, involves removing some of the inlet/EGR gubbins on top of the engine. 1996 Peugeot 306 1.9 Turbot Diesel = bit of a bastard, requires removal of intercooler or at least some of its plumbing and often bodged, even by garages, they cant be bothered so only replace the 3 they can see.

Morals: Check and see, if it looks too much like hard work, a competant garage/mechanic will do it for you inside an hour I expect.

Warmest regards Douglas

Changing the glow plugs isn't very tricky. Bottom hose can be a bugger, you end up having to gently lever it with a screwdriver.

It's not difficult on a Renault 19.

cheers all. I'll have a look later and see how hard it looks. By the sounds of it its quite an easy job. Do they have to be torqued in or just put in tight?

Does £120 seem expensive to have them changed then?

Any makes you reccomend for my car?

Might as well torque them, it's one less source of grief.

Do they need to be torqued in or are they just put in 'tight'?

Also if i wanted to test them, the best way is to dsiconnect the cable and use a 'bulb' screwdriver - one end on glowplug, other on battery terminal?? am i right?
