Road tax based on emmissions . what year did it start?

My current cars are 5 & 6 years old and I'd ideally like to change both for newer cars but the chance would be a fine thing.

Did the road tax system change recently. I remember there was one concession for cars under 1.5 ltr, but I also thought some new scheme has come in where cars from a certain age get rated on their emmissions. Is this correct and if so, what year of manufacture qualifies for this.

1st of March 2001 if I remember rightly, cos I got a new car in Feb 2001 so it ended up costing me £10 more a year!!!

The concession for cars with small engines started even earlier, not sure when though. Wonder if it'd work for the 1.3 litre Mazda RX-8 :D

Ebodsky (had.enuf-of@spam) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

"Vehicles registered before 1/3/01"

Well I pay £130 for my 02 2 litre diesel Mondeo.
