Yebbut the thermostat reacts to block temp, not returning water from the rad..

Yes, and the water it lets in is the same whether the thermo is at the top or the bottom.

The thermo gets block temp water whether at the top or the side, the water that replaces the hot stuff is the same sort of temp. regardless of thermo position (in other words)

Err no it isnt!!

The only way a feed type thermostat will work properly and maintain the block at a level temperature is with a remote sensing bulb which the Rover doesnt have.
