2002 1.4L rover 25

What engine is in it? any offers on the type. i have no idea, but the person i talking to on msn she says its loosing a bit of water. Hasnt the k series been dropped by that year, or the hg issues fixed by then?


All petrol rover 25s were K series IIRC.

K series engine, loosing water other than a radiator / hose problem is usually down to the inlet manifold gasket or head gasket going.

yea, that what I was thinking about. I was hoping tho that the 2002 spec engines may have had those issues put to bed by then.

Thermostat is fine- its only MGF's and Freelanders with the T/S in the wrong place.

Even the mk9 gasket still blows.

Crux of the problem is the top of the liners wobbling around and chaffing the gasket.

Rover were renound for employing less than perfect design engineers. Then again, would you work at rover as a design engineer if you could get a job at *any* other car manufacturer?

Wonder if the Chinese will sort it?

The wrong place is in the return line from the radiator. Is that not obvious...?

That would be why Ford wanted to buy them precisely for the K Series engine but were blocked by the government? And why BMW subsequently bought them?

In the last few years they probably didn't have many top stream designers

- but then they didn't actually design anything new.

So, where my 214 has the thermostat?

In fact, there was no typo.

why is that wrong? Many manufacturers including Toyota put the thermostat on the return line, they are usually heated by block water, when that is hot, it opens. I have yet to see a k series that has blown its head gasket without a good reason. thermostat failure has not accounted for any failures that I have seen (although it could), general water leaks, failed radiators, failed fans, failed inlet gasket, blocked breather pipes (water system) general lack of maintenance, failed water pumps, all these have caused failure that I have seen personally. I agree that the overall design is not the most robust, but if looked after then they are not usually a problem. I have heard of other people having unexplained failures, but I think they didn't look hard enough for the root cause.

I agree that the root cause is usually the same as any other car. Having the thermostat at the return from the readiator could in exceptional circumstances lead to a sudden rush of substantially cooler water entering the engine. We all know that cooling an engine too quickly can lead to all sorts of problems. Blown head gaskets being one.

You hit the nail on the head there!! It also causes fluctuating temperatures as the thermostat has high hysterisis as its sensing part is not close enough to the block temperature.

There is a reverse-reverse flow kit for fitment to Elise's and the like from Roverpart which retails at about 85 quid, and is highly recommended for not only hard driven cars but everyday ones too.

The water at the bottom of the rad is the same temperature no matter where the thermostat is located, when the thermostat opens the same temperature water comes in (with either thermostat location) to the block.
