Rover K series engines

Watchdog on tv the other day. Land Rover will replace head gaskets as they know there is a design fault. MG Rover will charge for any work required due to a faulty head gasket because there is nothing wrong with the design. Same engine. Is the K series the engine with long cylinder head bolts that hold the thing together? The bolts connect the head to the crankcase. Had to be sourced from Italy because no company here could produce them. Highly tensioned until they stretch- one use only. DaveK.

Maybe not up to date enought, but the bolts on the 1.4 8v K-series SWMBO had were, according to Mr Haynes, able to be reused.

Just ask for comments on this report in the alt.autos.rover group. So far the couple of responses suggest report wildly exaggerated.

I've not had a K-series, but surely if you don't let it get too hot, and keep enough water in it, your head gasket should last a fair while?

My thoughts exactly!

Do any other engines use extra long bolts in this way?

Apparently not with that engine. DaveK.

Yes that's it. Not sure about the Italy bit but they should only be used once.

Although as usual the report was grossly over exagerated. The K series has a small coolant capacity, and as with *any* engine if it gets too hot it will overheat and warp the head or cause other problems. The only reason it has a bad reputation is because of the usual people who buy cars and then never bother to check anything under the bonnet and then moan about it because it breaks down.

Perhaps other cars are more forgiving with larger coolant capacities but in the case of the K series, regular checks to make sure the levels are within spec and it will be no less prone to HGF than any other engine.
