Start with checking fan belt and power steering pump belt.

That sounds about right.

However when you say sqealing I take it you mean from the engine ?

Otherwise check the brake pads.

You don't say what year or engine, but I'd be surprised if it has no power steering, and if it has, it has a belt. If it's a diesel there is also a drive belt for the vacuum pump and that is also prone to squeal.

Yes, they ought to have checked the belts, but it depends how good the service was. The alternator belt on some engines is quite difficult to see unless you're under the car.

The next day I drove over a coat hanger which got sucked up and ripped the timing belt apart.

It is not easy to see these things on Rovers though.
