(An oldie writes) Years ago it was ok to go to the auto scrap yard (now known as the "Auto recycling centre" - or somesuch), and wander about taking bits off the cars and go pay for them. Now I think it's more slick: they have huts (called auo centres :-) )and strip the cars for you. Is that the case generally? Heath n safety I suppose - but not as much fun.
Its people like you that made them change the system, They woke up when you were taking small bits out in undisclosed pocketfuls till there was nothing left. :)
Environmental legislation is one reason; it's a requirement that scrapped vehicles can only be stored on a hard surface, with provision to prevent fuel and lubricants entering the soil. This was too costly for the type of scrap yard you were used to.
There are still a few about like that. Sadly not as friendly as the ones I used to go to as a teenager, the ones I get to visit now don't like you "wandering about to see what you can find" (which is a bit of a bind when, for example, you want to measure up some seats to see what will fit in your car).
Never stole anything - from anyone, in my life. I leave libelous statements to people like you. And so you'll be hearing from my solictors. Your ip and isp address noted.
Stored in hard surface compounds, de polluted on hard surface. Then put out on bare ground (can be muddy) for a month or so. You won't get shocks as they are are cut open to drain. Compared to most quite safe as nothing stacked and they will roll a car over if asked. They did start to put concrete down over more of the site but then re-read the regs. But I have found some cars that have been missed, battery, air con, all fluids still present.
One of the biggest UK recyclers, with shredder on site, mentioned as
3rd biggest at 10,000/year

turnover is high and cars come and go very quick. They let classicsor lower volume / up market stuff (Jags, Mercs, bigger BMWs) lie a bitlonger until well picked over. The stocklist isn't very complete, itdepends on who was there on the day they put them out.
