Why do you think the light is there?

It is easy to reset the light, but why would you, just get a service and they will reset it. The car knows better than your mum when it needs servicing. If she can't afford a service then perhaps she should get a car she can afford to run, or none at all.

I would like to see a feature that means the car would not run after say 500 miles after the service light comes on, or maybe only runs in limp home mode.

Doubt it, it's a car, and I don't it's programmed in a non-biased manner by BMW themselves.

The computer assumes the engine uses a really good synthetic oil, I'm guessing chepaest service/cheapest oil?

So really you're well overdue for an oil change unless your mum knows better - cars these days don't deteriorate significantly between services (not like they did 50 years ago :-)

long line of yellows with a couple of reds at the end of the line. Beneath the speedometer.

I think on those it might also come up with "oil service" or "inspection". how to reset them, and do oil changes and insepctions are on the web at many places.

Stick some tape over the lights. If you're going to bodge, bodge properly.

Agree to a certain extent, but what about the average person (Me :) who does their own servicing without specialist equipment. Or those with computer know how could put in false entries. Something physical (and I know that it's not a great example) but everytime you remove the sump plug (which could have a chip in it) and it registers then.

It gets worse, she has lease on a hotel with her Italian boyfriend who is a 'chef' and is ill.

Hotel is falling apart, first year and they won't do anything. He's permanently got diahorrea and he continues to cook for the residents; now I did food hygiene certificates and I know you aint meant to do that!
