The universal joint is in the bottom left, to the right of it are two extension bars.
You might not need a universal joint though if the plugs aren't hard to reach.

Most *modern* petrol cars don't; they are coil-in-cap.

The problem with the Polo is that it's got coil packs.
I replaced the CTS on my wife's 2002 polo (1.2 3cyl) last week. I've been serviving cars since I was about 6, but *I* couldn't easily identify where they were.
I knew where they were, because they couldn't be anywhere else, but you need a full toolkit to replace them, because you need to unbolt the colipacks from the top of the cam cover before you see them. I'd guess they're buried pretty deep too!
Car maintenance course still isn't a bad idea though!
