I have a 52 reg 1.8LX Mondeo, 95,000 on the clock.
The other day, waiting to pull out on to a main road with engine ticking over, what sounded like the starter motor trying to engage happened. It sounded awful.
Any ideas?

Make sure the thin wire to the solenoid hasn't accidently ended up bridged with the main battery live. Also, check the ignition barrell connectors for corroded connections.
