Sticky wheel?

Hope this isn't too off topic.

I'm not sure if I'm turning into a snail but in this weather my steering wheel gets horribly sticky.

I don't suppose you can help me with my metamorphosing into a snail problem but does anybody have a good steering wheel cleaning method. Flash liquid seems to leave it just as sticky as before.

I've used windscreen wipes in the past which do quite well, but they can make the wheel a little more slippery. Perhaps an abrasive like cif would be better?

Using a dish cloth (now relegated to floor cloth) with a bowl of water with washing up liquid and keep going until all the gunge is off the wheel worked for me.

Thanks to both for your replies. I'll go for the washing up liquid first.

....and don't drive with dirty hands.

what comes off is a mix of skin, sweat and dirt, bit hard to avoid unless you wear gloves :)

I find microfibre cloths good for this type of thing, wet with a weak detergent solution. I only get them when they're on some type of offer. Have a cupboard full now ;-)

I do seem to get rather sticky hands in this weather. Not pleasant for my poor customers when I shake hands. Maybe it's my hands that need the attention.

Ah, a use for that useless microfibre bath towel that I thought was a good idea at the time. If I dig out the sowing machine I'll get a fair few cleaning cloths out of the towel.

Microfibre bath towel - sounds like a bizarre idea. The microfibre cloths seem to have a benign abrasive action on all surfaces I've tried. They'll cut trhough grease, for example, without the need for detergent

- but that makes them very difficult to clean. Hadn't occurred to me to try drying skin with one . . .

perhaps you suffer from hyperhidrosis? There are treatments available, but often problemmatic.

one thing to avoid is using fabric softener/conditioner when they get washed, it spoils the pick up action.

I had wondered if it was just normal hot weather stickiness or something more. You've given me a name to google. Thanks for that. First glance it seems to be about people who sweat large amounts which I don't but I'll have a proper look tomorrow.

In which case you've not got it :-)

It was an Aldi impulse purchase. I'm almost certain it was labeled as a microfibre bath towel. I intended to keep it at work for when I had a shower but it was just too weird. You couldn't rub yourself dry as it sort of stuck. You have to dab yourself with it and I much prefer a vigorous rub.

I remember when fabric conditioner first appeared a long time ago. A consumer program washed one towel with and one towel without fabric conditioner and then poured water on them. On the one washed with fabric conditioner the water 'balled up' and sat on the surface. Can't think of the name of the program but the one with Esther Rantzen which specialised in strange shaped vegetables.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Periproct" saying something like:

That's Life.

sticky hands would usually mean they sweat a lot. Hyperhidrosis does not mean that you sweat everywhere a lot, it can be confined to just one area, such as the palms.

So I'm just an unpleasantly sticky person. Roll on autumn .
