I have slight movement on the front struts according to my MOT which passed. But I was wondering if this could cause a knocking sound when pulling off and braking ?
Its not the wishbones, track rod, ends, dog bone, etc all changed.
Anyone know exactly whats involved in doing this job, the vehicle is a mk4 golf 2001 petrol AZD engine.

I guess my suspicion will go back to the non oem pads moving in the carrier. Odd as I have used these pads before with no problems. But maybe next pads and discs will be genuine as the clunk is a annoyance.
Trying to locate my haynes for this strut job is its simple. It looks like some rubber bung on top and a bearing from eurocarparts pictures and I'm guessing the bering has worn and causing slight movement.The exact wording on the MOT advisorie was "slight movement on the Mcphearson strut nearside" I guess the other sides not far off might be worth doing together. Just thinking best to try and do it myself before next MOT time as its the same tester who is like a hawk! which is good I guess.
Just wondering if you can pop that rubber bung thing off from under the bonnet and do it like that or does the strut have to come off etc.. hopefully it won't require thinks like discs, pads, hub or anything like that coming off, can't remember how it is connected from memory.
he could have meant that there is play in the strut itself. I would establish what exactly has play (if any) and whether it is enough to actually cause a problem before doing anything.
I had a Renault Savanna once where the top strut bearings wore out and there used to be a noise on corners as the struts moved slightly at the tops. Although this noise didn't happen when accelerating or braking I would image that it could.
