I got a problem with my Mk 2 Golf Driver (auto). The temp guage has never seemed to work - occasionally I get a small bit of movement but nothing to get excited about. Also, the interior blower only seems to work when the engine is cold. So, it's OK when I go out first thing to clear the windows, but once it's warmed up the blowing stops.
I'm wondering if these are both signs of a dead thermostat, or is it likely to be two different problems?

Check your coolant level - if too low may be insufficient to trigger the temp sensor (hence the temp gauge problem and will not of course supply hot coolant to the heater matrix (hence no heater either)
If OK then you may have both a temp sensor/gauge problem, and an airlock into the heater - not sure where it is on the golf but an old Polo we had, had a bleed screw on the heater inlet , accessible from under the bonnet.
Sounds like a dead thermostat with the temp guage. Just done the wifes Mondeo today. They're only a tenner and at worst an hours work. Not sure about the blower though.
Coolant is fine. I topped that up myself not too long ago and have kept a check on it since I had a small leak from the hose.
Guess I'd better figure out where the bleed thing is and have a go at that tomorrow.

This happened to me - it turned out that the pollen filter was soaking wet and completely clagged up and the heater blower (snail fan under the passenger side glovebox) shuddered to a complete stop after a short time. Cue lots of fun with misted up windscreens and tearing the dash apart to find out what was wrong with the motor - which worked perfectly outside the heater housing! Removing the pollen filter fixed the problem.
Skoda Octavia so the Golf one may be in the same place with the pollen filter in the gap between the windscreen and engine bulkhead.
