Thermostat Done

Well, maybe it's the weather that's just changed, but so far, so good. The new thermostat seems to be working pretty well. Temperatures remaining constant on the dash, where as before, it was up and down and all over the place. Which is weird, since the thermostat I removed had no visible problem.

I tried pouring some water through it. Still nothing. I dunno.

excellent , tie a piece of string round it and drop it into a pan of boiling water, it should open if its working correctly.

They seldom do. They just stop working. Still looking perfect. As reg suggested, stick it in some boiling water to see if it opens.

Surprised that you appear to have fixed the fault? :-) Mike.

Though bits of the copper stuff looks furry... maybe a tablet of calgon would do the trick?

So yeah, basically, confused. Either we've had a sudden shift of weather over night, there was some other issue with the coolant, or there is something differently odd about that old thermostat...

Well, given the above, erm, yeah. Im bewildered. But the temperature is definitely staying constant now....

Unless... what if it was opening early?

If you have or could get hold of a thermometer that could read temperatures over 100C, you could check it. I once compared 2 thermostats, both supposed to open at 88C. 1 old 1 new. Both in the same container. The new one was opening quite a bit earlier than the old one. I don't know what the temperature was, but it was certainly lower than the old one. That one didn't open until the water was near boiling, and seemed much more sluggish in it's action. Mike.
