too much oil

If you put a clean bowl underneath then you can at least put some back in if you drain out too much! Give it a wipe around the drain plug first so you remove the gunge.

I've just change the oil and filter on my ford escort 1.8 TD (endura de)1998. the handbook states 5.1 Lt with a filter change I put 5 Lt in, but the oil is well over the full mark, onto the flexible part of the dipstick. what's the best way to get some oil out? I thought of undoing the drain plug, then doing it up quickly when some comes out, apart from getting covered in oil would this way coarse any other problems? Or is there a better way?

Thanks PA

You have started the engine? The new filter has to fill up.

Yeah, took it for a drive for ten minetues left it for 20 min dipped it, then left it for about 6 hours dipped it, still showing above the full mark.

I'm afraid its your only option - plus bear in mind too much oil can cause oil seal problems.

How much above the full mark now?

I've over-filled stuff before (not by massive amounts) and just left it to burn off.....

Of course, if you're still massively over, then this could be a problem.

How about a big syringe and length of tubing down the dipstick pipe?

I'm sorry, you said you were going to teach?

Oil seal problems could be the least of his owrries if the pistons are smacking the oil on the downstroke.

I had another oil filter, so I've just put the new one on let it run for a few minutes, now the level is about 5mm , may be a little more above the full mark. do i still need top get some more out? i've only just got the motor i really dont want to be blowing oil seals or worst! the idea about the tube sounds good, I've got some tubing i used to fill the autobox on a audi i had, i think i over filled that too, hence no more audi :-)

Thanks for the replies PA
