Vauxhall Astra 1.7TD - Can't find small enough shims

My 1995 Vauxhall (actually an Opel) Astra 1.7TD is fitted with an Isuzu turbodiesel. It has done 180 000 miles. The inlet valve seats on this engine are well known to errode. This shrinks the gap between the camshaft and valve. A shim is fitted in between, to adjust the gap to the specified 0.15 mm, engine cold and valve closed.



I recently measured clearance on one valve to 0.05 mm, so it's time to adjust the valves. This is done by means of exchanging shims. But my vauxhall dealer doesn't have any thinner shims than what's currently fitted (thickness 2.35 mm). Over it's lifetime, the shim thickness has decreased from 2.60 mm to 2.35 mm. When the clearances reach 0 mm the engine is down on compression and won't start properly.



What are my options now? Can I take the head off, and in some way make room for a slightly thicker shim?



Easiest way is to get your old shims reduced in thickness on a surface grinder. Most good engineering shops will have one of these. -0.1mm shouldn't be a problem. Most shims are through-hardened not surface hardened but it may be wise to check this first.

Are the shims simple bits of metal? If so, a micrometer and a bit of sandpaper (several grades of course) should work just fine. Especially for taking off only .1mm. What thickness would you like? 2.25mm?

Yes, basically. My Vauxhall dealer however, disagrees. They therefore charge =A310 a piece. Shims are sylinder-formed bits of hard metal. They fit thightly into buckets. Above it the camshaft rotates and repeatedly pushes the shims downwards. This opens the valves.

theshims are clearly visible, as the camshafts are removed. If you lookcarefully, you see the buckets as well. I have never observed any shim wear (thickness decrease). I use a micrometer to measure the thickness.

I'm sceptical about using sandpaper. First of all, the surface of the shims are smooth and very hard. Secondly doubt I can make a level surface, without any pits. We're talking about hundredths of millimeters, you know.=20

Would it matter on the underside.

I have known the valves to be shortened with no ill effect on motorcycles in a similar situation.

*ding*. Done it loads of times on bike shims, as I'm too tight to pay up to £8 per shim when I always seem to need at least 10 out of 16 replacing and the bastards no longer did an exchange shim service that used to be pretty popular.

I now need some sandpaper which can challenge the shim steel, which I suppose is of great hardness.

By the way, are there any negative aspects of smaller clearances than specified? I suppose the camshaft runs more smoothly if it's closer to the valves.
