Vectra fan not switching on at the right temperature.

you may find there is a sludge build up around the fan switch, take it out and have a look, if it all seems clean then change the switch, or just add a manual switch

Sorry, should have said that. I had a new fan switch put in four weeks ago because the fan refused to come on at all when I bought the car :P

From the description you have given it could equally be that the fan switching point is the same, but the gauge is reading incorrectly.

Er, are you sure you bought the right switch?

Reasonably sure. It wasn't a genuine Vx part, but the guy at the parts store pulled a list of compatible parts based on my registration number, and the garage that fitted it didn't say anything about it being wrong.

It is a possibility. If the engine was overheating, would I not see steam etc. after stopping the car?

How long would the engine need to be "in the red zone" for before there'd be telltale signs of overheating or damage?
