This is probably not the best group but perhaps someone will direct me?

I am trying to identify my gradfather's taxi cab:

Brian Drury gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

The bonnet looks very Edwardian Renault.

Red herring, I think. That looks like a component/accessory of some kind.

The cylindrical thing on the running board? Looks like there's a pipe running from a junction on top to behind the dashboard. Could it be acetylene ("carbide") for the lamps? If so, it'll be a cylinder from some supplier (could the "C" be for "Carbide"?)

Thanks for that I am sure that's it. Presumably his was an earllier model before they thought of protecting the driver.

The BMC is curious as it also appears on the door.

Cheers

Brian Drury gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Back then, the manufacturers have sold the chassis with or without body. For those sold without, the bodies would have been built by a variety of manufacturers. Especially for taxis, there would have been specialist suppliers.

more like it. Granddad's was RHD though. Maybe BMC was something like Bermondsey Motor Cab? Near where he lived!

Bonnet and radiator shape do suggest Renault. BMC is on a plate on the door as well, suggesting maybe the name of the taxi company.

There was a British Motor Cab company in 1914.

Brian Drury expressed precisely :

The chamfer around the edge of the bonnet would suggest a Renault.

Brian Drury gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

A quick google on "britishmm"'s suggestion "British Motor Cab" found a reference to a company called "General Motor Cab", in Brixton, who ran about 500 Renault taxis from about 1907.

The design is /very/ typical Renault, with the dashboard radiator.

Aha! I think you have it...
