Volvo S40 aircon on on off off on off on.....

A work pal of mine has a 99 S40 1.8 with aircon.

He tells me it works but intermittently. It just trips off / on with no particular pattern to help explain why. Its been doing it for a year or so and last year it was recharged as a precaution but this did not cure it.

Is there any AC specialists in this NG that can give me any pointers

Thx IJ

Either its been over charged with refrigerant (unlikely, but possible- and should be better now due to natural leakage) or you have a fault with the compressor over temperature cutout. This is a round dish thing strapped to the side of the compressor which interupts power to the cluch if it gets too hot. Try temporaily bypassing this and see what happens.

lol!!!!!

they are designed to do this they work when they hit the max permitted temp in the air box and when they reach the lowest temp the turn off otherwise you would have the air con pump freezing the air coming in and you'd be swatting iclecles away from your face

it's commonly known as "cycling" ;/

I have aircon ( climate control ) in my Synergie and think I understand what you mean about cycling. i.e. tripping off or throttling down when a desired temperature has been reached.

But my mate says there are days when it just doesn't come on at all then maybe an hour into a journey it starts working.

I specifically asking him to describe whether there was any pattern , so maybe someone might make sense of it. But as I originally stated, it works randomly

I do think it is electrical . Whatever enable the compressor to trip in isn't functioning IMO
