Volvo V70 handbrake

Feb 24, 2008 4 Replies

Now ceased to be funny

Has been to the garage 3 times (only paid the first time)

Hand brake holds fine when facing down hill but does not hold when facing up hill

Discs/drums about 2 years old new brake shoes about a year ago

Garage adjusts hand brake fine for a may be 10 applications then does hold on up hill

Hand brake lift only a couple of notches when working but only 4 or 5 when not holding

Any ideas most welcome

Tony

TBH I'd just get used to leaving the car in gear and not worry about it.

OTOH there's something wrong somewhere. I'd just replace the lot, but that's me, and I'd be DIYing rather than paying £30 / hour plus.

If this is the drum in disc system I'd say the operating assembly in the drum is seized on the backplate - it should be able to move to centralise the shoes. There should be zero wear on the shoes unless you use it on the move - so if it is also going out of adjustment quickly that confirms my diagnosis of the shoes not centralising therefore wearing one which will be rubbing slightly all the time.

The shoes are not fitted properly with the retaining springs either missing or broken.

Quite well known about if you watch on the volvoforums.co.uk
