My old TU engined peugeot 205 overheated to the point of billowing (sp?) oil out of the exhaust and sounding very very rattley (rad fan failed in traffic on the motorway while i was stuck in the outside lane). I thought it was utterly knackered, limped off the motorway and let it cool a while by cruising slowly (after determining the fan had failed and i still had water) - she slowly stopped rattling, stopped blowing oil out of the back and was back to 100% - lasted another 40K miles before someone wrote her off.
