Sounds straightforwarsd i know, but I'm not so sure. From what appeared to be minor weeping at the sump gasket a few weeks ago, our 1993 Passat 2.0CL Estate is now losing oil at an alarming rate. The entire oil filter housing is wet with oil, at least some appears to be creeping UP the electrical connector on the top. There is also oil leaking down from the lefthand side onto the top of the gearbox. I have suspected crankcase compression as this is the classic symptom on the old British engines I usually work on. Cylinder compression is about 200 psi on all 4 pots, I'm happy to rule out worn rings as a cause. Anyone offer any advice? The Haynes manual is proving to be a dead loss, any resources online? If it's the old 8V it's not the oil pressure switch only doing it when it's hot is it?
Thanks for the suggestion. I've found the problem - the PCV valve is completely open, while the connecting hoses had melted and collapsed internallty. VW want 50 quid for the valve so it's off to see what I can find on a scrapper now, Cheers, Bill.
Yep that'd explain it :-) IIRC they're common to quite a few VWs & Audis.
