Went to the bodyshop today...

Went to the bodyshop today to see how the Capri is going on because it's been delayed and my mate who is doing it said it was just about finished ready for paint so a great time to get some piccies.

Anyways I walked in and started looking around it. Bearing in mind it's had two wings, two rear arches, a few spots on the bonnet in the usual places, some patches where rust was cut out and metal put back in there was hardly any filler anywhere.

Turns out he has a Silver Shadow to do that needs alot of leading doing and he wanted something to practice on so decided to choose my car. HOW HAPPY AM I? Looking at the work he's had to do, I'd feel as guilty as hell if I gave him what he asked for doing the job so he may just find I can't add up all that well....

Troll alert,

This cannot be the real Conor, a happy none argumentative Conor.....

I'm not sure lead is the definitive filler these days. It eventually lifts off the steel through corrosion.

Now we are going to have an argument :-((

If your were around when lead was used in original production - Jags, etc, you'd often see them less than 10 years old in scrap yards with the lead separating from the steel. Has this too on an S1 Bentley I owned - the sidelight housings were spot welded to the wings and then lead filled to give a smooth fillet. That also lifted.

just wondering if we are going to see the pictures of your capri taking shape with the work being done??

If you'd seen the work that's been done for the money I'm getting it done for, you'd be happy too - lol.

Is that when they've done the leading over rust or when it's been cut out and replaced with good steel?

No problem. Uploaded what I've got as I've left the camera with him due to me working next week. Before photos trying to make it look as bad as possible. The only leading done at this point was on the bonnet but you can get an idea of the job. Bit of filler on the wings as they were pattern ones and the fit was s**te to say the least. The rear arches weren't actually rotten originally but they had just started to lift from the inner arch so it was decided to take the lip off, sort out anything on the inner lip and put a fresh lip on. The piccie of the NS inner wing when the wings were taken off - that's seam sealer/stuff they use to fit panels at the bottom and not filler, thankfully. Had a bloody heart attack when I first saw it until my mate peeled it off and showed me. The ropey bits just in front of the hinges gave been cut out and replaced with fresh metal even though the passenger side didn't look too bad however it was getting a bit thin.

When it is finished, there's going to be no rubber side strips or vinyl graphics on. Going for a clean look as much as possible hence the blending of the wing to front valance.

thank you conner :) its very interesting, and is coming along very nicly. i hope you keep us informed as it go`s on.

Hopefully it'll be done a week on Tusday/Wednesday. THere's a Capri show just outside Evesham on the 21st so want to go to that in it. A nice 400 mile round trip will do it the world of good.

i have just looked on the map, unfortionally Evesham is to far for me, its a shame as i like old car shows,

oh well maybe next time :)

Corrosion? On a Capri?

Sure it'll be fine.

I do like to see a car restored well.

Not sure I'd bother with a Capri Laser though - a Tickford, maybe!

I decided after years of "Rust Remedy" followed by a tin of gobbo to recreate arches and best quality 99p spray can paint jobs that perhaps I should do at least one properly.

By the time I've finished with this one, I reckon I could have bought a Tickford. Ah well, apparently it's not supposed to be about the money.

Ah well, apparently it's not supposed to be about the money.

too true conner, it is nothing to do with the money, its the matter of having a car you want and like.

i had a blue one about three years ago and wish i never sold it, the same with my hillman minx and my triumph herald 1200.

Is that a relatively good state for a capri before you started? It needs a V8 BTW. And how are you going to plug the little circular mounting holes for the side strips?

probably weld them in and then grind them to shape. that's my guess on how he has been doing the rest of the car. :)

I deliverately went out to make it look worse than it was. It just had the standard rot around the headlights, on the tips of the front wings and the bonnet edge which are some of the compulsory rust points on Capris. The rest of the compulsory parts were solid.

It's already been done on the rear quarter by welding up the holes. No holes in the supplied front wings so there's only the doors left to weld up now. Thought one of the arch piccies showed it but they don't.

It is. I thought I'd got them on one of the rear arch piccies as he's already done the ones in the rear quater panels. No little round circles appearing in my paint 6 months down the line - lol.

Where is he, and what's his number? my Triumph might need some work doing, come MOT time....

Cheers,
