It wasn't my vehicle; when the bearing started whining I stopped, grabbed the offending wheel and shook it. There didn't seem to be any free play. (There was no jack in the vehicle.) The noise got no worse during the journey. I carried on until I started to brake for a roundabout at the end of the motorway, and the pedal went to the floor. In a Transit that was fairly well laden...

Hence my caution to the OP about completing his proposed trip.

Fair play. The rear of the car was humming like a bastard so I changed a bearing, there were complications and it was better but still humming. So I changed it again, it was still humming at the back so obviously both* needed doing and I may have redone the first one for nothing. And it keeps pissing down. And I have slightly lost heart.

If its like the wife's FTO and the rear wheels have a bit of negative camber, it might have been the tyres. I certainly mis-diagnosed her rear wheelbearing and it was only cos of a post on her FTO forum that the tyres got looked at.

Well to be honest we had no problems until we replaced the standard wheels with alloys. I am wondering if the load is off centre or something.

I had something like that and it turned out to be a bulge on the inner sidewall..

Have you rotated the tyres to see if it moves? And inspect them while you're at it?

Nope, I'd get it done first, unless I was thinking of scrapping the car afterwards, then I'd make sure my RAC was fully paid up and take a punt!
