Not sure about the relative cost, but Millers do both 506.1 and 505.1 specification oils in their XF Longlife range.

Bought 5 litres of Formula E 5W/30 for £18.50 from a Ford dealer in Birmingham last Friday...
Christ that much?! It's £14/ 5litres around here- nearly every dealer will knock at least 10% off if you ask.
Tim.
Look up my thread in June about the fuel consumption of my Focus. It improved by over 10% after ditching the 10/40 it had in it and filling up with AC Delco 5/30 fully synthetic for just under £10 for 5 litres. Where you get it from I can't help with. My mate got my can from a factor somewhere in Aberdeen.
Fuel consumption is still the same btw and the engine hasn't used any oil at all so far after 2000 miles with it in.
That's interesting. I tend to shove 10W40 in my Golf. Is there any reason why it wouldn't handle piss thin 5w30?
None that I can think of.
Whoops. I did of course mean £10 a 'standard big containerful', i.e. 5 litres. My bad.
I found 5W/30 in an Asda for £8.99 just over a year ago, but since then it's always been £14 and up... usually quite a way up.
Luckily the Mondeo doesn't use much oil. It does at the moment though, since I slightly overfilled it (by about 2/3l) in the gloom of an Autumn evening last week.. doesn't seem to have caused any hassle except for two or three times I've had a puff of white smoke after very heavy acceleration.
It's running fine, which is putting me off being arsed to get under it and let some out...
Bear in mind in a PD diesel on longlife servicing you can do up to 30K between changes. My A3 managed 24k with a bit to go.
Also, the oil can be obtained for less from GSF/Euro.
Even an older BMW/Merc will benefit from decent oil.
A noteable exception being the VAG PD mentioned. The unit injectors place a high load on the cam.
The last time I visited GSF they'd stopped stocking quamtum- the guy said the price had gone up too much. They push the Fuchs range now.
